Sinfonia Cymru was formed by Musical Director Gareth Jones and creates a unique platform to launch young players into the music profession at the beginning of their career. Sinfonia Cymru will perform a richly varied programme: from Beethoven's light-hearted Symphony No.8, written in 1812 when the composer was battling increasing deafness to Sibelius' Pelleas et Melisande, a nine-movement orchestral suite dating from 1905, and one of his most popular concert pieces. Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto, written in 1959 and performed by Laura van der Heijden, is widely considered to be one of the high points of the cello repertoire, up there with the very best cello concertos.Copland's QuietCitywas developed from music he had written for the unsuccessful play of the same name by Irwin Shaw.
