The Hallé and Sir Mark Elder have established a formidable reputation for their Elgar performances. They launch the season with his exciting and colourful musical souvenir of a holiday in Italy. Venezuelan-born pianist Sergio Tiempo joins them for one of the most popular piano concertos in the repertoire. The concert ends with Sibelius’s powerfully elemental 5th Symphony, the main theme of the finale inspired, so the composer tells us, by the sight of migrating swans. The Halle website.
