Winner of the 1999 Jerwood Award, Akram Khan is a rising star on the contemporary dance scene. This fantastically skilled dancer and choreographer performs both Asian traditional and western contemporary dance. Inspired by the Mahabharata story of Queen Ghandari, who blindfolds herself for life to follow her blind husband, Gnosis explores the notion of inner knowledge and clouded vision, of ‘seeing darkness yet being blind to light’. This new solo show features choreography by Khan developed in collaboration with the internationally renowned kathak masters Sri Pratap Pawar and Gauri Sharma Tripathi, plus puppetry by Blind Summit Theatre and a band of live musicians including Yoshie Sunahata (taiko drummer from Japanese company KODO).
