Fresh is an evening of dance with and for young people. Uniquely at Fresh, dynamic youth companies share the bill with top professional artists. The Place, the UK’s premier centre for contemporary dance, presents Fresh, its annual evening of dance with and for young people, on Saturday 6 December. Highlights of the programme for the evening, which uniquely features exceptional youth companies alongside professional artists, include The Place Prize entries from Ben Wright and Aletta Collins, as well as The Place’s own youth company, Shift. Renowned dance artist Rachel Krische will reprise her role as the sufferer of information overload in Aletta Collins’ Lap Dancer, which was last seen in The Place Prize finals. Ben Wright’s This Moment is Your Life, also commissioned for The Place Prize, offers the audience a lesson in disco dancing; while Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company presents a fast-paced quartet. Drift is an intensely physical duet choreographed by London Contemporary Dance School student James Wilton and performed by LCDS students Natalie Trewinnard and Alasdair Stewart, who are currently apprentices with Scottish Dance Theatre and Hofesh Shechter Company respectively. The Place’s Shift dance company will present a piece choreographed for them by Rick Nodine, most recently the movement director for The Revenger’s Tragedy at the National Theatre. Additionally, Cando2, an integrated youth company for disabled and non-disabled dancers, will perform a piece by Protein Dance co-founder Bettina Strickler and Darren Anderson. Instep Dance Company, Rouge, and B.A. Dance will also present short new works. In addition to performances, Fresh offers one-hour workshops called Unwrapped, where young people have the opportunity to gain insight into how professional choreographers create their work. No previous experience is necessary, but places are limited. The audience can also meet and talk to the artists following the performance, while in the theatre bar there will be a DJ and a selection of non-alcoholic cocktails on sale.
