Based on the original Belasco play that inspired the opera, Madam Butterfly is the story of a young geisha who marries Lieutenant Pinkerton, a dashing American naval officer. What begins as an arranged marriage and little more than a one night stand for the visiting Pinkerton, becomes a profound spiritual bond for Butterfly, who forsakes her culture, her religion and her identity for his love, only to be abandoned, carrying his unborn child.
