Nederlands Dans Theater 1, 'the flagship', was founded in 1959 and is highly successful all over the world. The dancers are all soloists and are not divided into categories, all have equal status. Tar and Feathers sees a pianist improvise around Mozart's music at a grand piano perching spectacularly on metre-high legs, as six dancers perform around him. Wings of Wax, performed to the music of Bach and Philip Glass boasts lavish imagery with a complete tree hanging upside down above the action, as eight dancers emerge from the blackness. Drawn Onward by Lightfoot-Leon sees the dancers faced with a massive door that periodically opens then clangs shut. Curiosity, apprehension, uncertainty and resolve flood through this piece with a compelling and gripping intensity.
