Rambert Dance Company - Songs of a Wayfarer/Irony of Fate/Swamp/Elsa Canasta archiveBritain's biggest and most exciting touring dance company who often tour two programmes at a time. Dancing to a mixture of musical styles they provide enormously watchable evenings. Receiving its London premiere, Songs of a Wayfayer, by Kim Brandstrup, is an evocative work exploring the complex emotions of unrequited love, performed to Mahler's achingly beautiful song-cycle of the same title. Irony of Fate, by Rambert’s Associate Choreographer, Rafael Bonachela, is a sublime duet for dancer and violinist. In this piece virtuosity and passion come together, as the two artists embark on a journey that takes them to the brink of exhaustion Michael Clark has revisited and expanded his classic Swamp, a piece he first created for Rambert's 60th Anniversary. Clark's choreography clearly shows the influence of his classical background, but this only acts as a foundation for his originality and inventiveness. The programme ends with a genuine crowd-pleaser - Elsa Canasta by Javier De Frutos. Sexual chemistry bursts out of this vibrant and witty interpretation of Cole Porter's music, as 14 dancers throw themselves into a series of passionate encounters, serenaded by the smouldering vocals of a female jazz singer. Please note that Elsa Canasta contains scenes of a provocative nature and may not be suitable for children under the age of 13.
