Maqoma began his dance training at Moving Into Dance and went on to PARTS where he studied under Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. Among others in Europe, he collaborated with such respected Western dance artists as Akram Khan. He has gone on to establish himself as one of South Africa's leading artists. Exit/Exist tells the story of South African choreographer Gregory Maqoma's 18th-century ancestor Chief Maqoma. Born in 1798, the Chief was a respected warrior who lost his land in conflict with the British, was subsequently imprisoned, and died on Robben Island. In a transformational performance Maqoma draws the audience into the narrative, inviting us to reflect on how these past events inform our personal and collective identities. The soaring vocals of four South African singers accompany fusion guitarist Giuliano Modarelli, who together perform a score by internationally renowned composer Simphiwe Dana, winner of two Metro FM Music Awards. The music weaves throughout Maqoma's vibrant kinetic world, illuminating his exploration of race and power, cultural tradition and personal legacy. Vuyani Dance Theatre - Exit/Exist website.
