Dolly Mixtures archive8 Ordinary Women 1 Extraordinary Story. Dolly Mixtures is based on eight South Shields women who set-up the variety act, The Dolly Mixtures when one of their husbands' Ken Graham was diagnosed with cancer in 1972. For 15 years they performed in working men's clubs throughout the North-East to raise money for charity with every penny going to cancer research. They raised £100,000 performing in the male-dominated North-East clubs of the 1970s and 1980s to fight the scourge of cancer. We see the Dolly Mixtures having to overcome 'amorous' committee men and difficult audiences. The action takes place in the north-east between late in 1972 and 1988 in Hilda Joyce's South Shields home; a Tyneside hospital and in a variety of clubs throughout the region.
