Armide tells the captivating tale of a sorceress, whose power over her kingdom is challenged when a Knight, Renaud, resists her spells and frees her prisoners. Vowing revenge, Armide tries to lure Renaud to his death but quickly discovers she cannot control the power of love, with tragic consequences. Gluck is one of the most important composers of the classical period and Armide includes some of his most beautiful and sensuous music. Armide s story has inspired over 100 operas and ballets, but Gluck s opera has survived them all. Sung in English
