The Shepherd King. Delicate, intricate, and charming, 'Il re pastore' is a fine example of a youthful Mozart showing much more thant the promise of genius. Written when he was nineteen, 'Il re pastore' is still several operas into Mozart's career, and the simple tale of a shepherd who inherits a kingdom is told with immense skill. The shepherd Amyntas, is blissfully unaware of his royal blood, and anticipating a happy future with his country bride. War and politics pass him by until his claim to the throne is championed, a turn of events which finds him very unwilling to exchange pasture for palace. Sung in English. Revival.
