In 1670 Louis XIV and his court were much amused by the language and manners of a Turkish delegation, and subsequently the king asked Moliere and Lully to create 'something Turkish' for a performance at the Chateau de Chambord. Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme was the result. This is an enchanting piece of entertainment which couples Moliere's wit with Lully's music and song.
