CORONAVIRUS: All UK venues closed on 16th March 2020 but restrictions were lifted on 19th July 2021 with venues free to run shows to full capacity audiences after that though there are still issues with company members being forced to self-isolate on being 'pinged'. In September it is possible that a COVID vaccination certificate (or exemption) may be mandated for entry. Please note that iUKTDb archive listings between March 2020 and July 2021 may not be accurate as we did not receive details of all rescheduled and cancelled shows.

Details

A short opera first performed in 1892 based on a Harlequin comedy. 'Clowns' - fun, laughter, entertainment, mirth. But offstage? In Leoncavallo's 1892 drama of jealousy and revenge the boundaries between the imaginary world of theatre and the real passions of a troupe of travelling players are broken down with violent results. Canio exacts revenge on his unfaithful wife Nedda and her lover Silvio in the unexpected climax of a play, while their audience realize only gradually the horror unfolding before them. It is an opera of emotional indulgence, from the joyful birdsong that inspires Nedda's 'Stridono lass?' to 'Vesti la giubba', Canio's famous heartrending outburst of self-pity.

Performers Bernard Abervandana (Canio - some dates), Ronald Samm (Canio - some dates), Allison Buchanan (Nedda), Keel Watson (Tonio), James Cleverton (Silvio), Andrew Clarke (Beppe).
Author Ruggiero Leoncavallo (1892). Lyrics Ruggero Leoncavallo. Company Englisgh Touring Opera. Company Pegasus Opera. Director Nikolai Foster. Conductor Stuart Stratford. Design Neil Irish.
