Sir Joseph Porter KCB has risen effortlessly to the rank of First Lord of the Admiralty without ever going to sea. However, his attempts to win the hand of Josephine, daughter of Captain Corcoran, have run into choppy waters, as Josephine is in love with a common sailor. Will Sir Joseph have his way? Or will true love conquer all? HMS Pinafore was one of Gilbert and Sullivan's earliest successes, combining elements of pantomime, melodrama and political satire. Sullivan's score perfectly captures the mood of the piece. The curtain-raiser is Trial By Jury, in which two people who are unable to settle their differences find themselves in court, and the full majesty of the law is brought to bear upon their case.
