Details

Every half an hour from 20:30-22:45 each evening, the full fa?ade of the building facing onto Covent Garden Piazza, will become a vast canvas celebrating the history of The Royal Opera House from the 18th century to the present day, shining a spotlight on the rich world of creativity that flourishes both on and off the stage. This extraordinary time-travelling tale will be comprised of three short acts lasting a total of six minutes. Bespoke projection-mapped animation and film footage will be woven together, set to a specially curated score. Extracts will include Alcina, composed for Handel's first season at the Theatre Royal (now the Royal Opera House), The Mad Hatter's Tea Party from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Joby Talbot and the captivating Queen of the Night aria from Mozart's The Magic Flute. Act One will dive into the history of the Royal Opera House and explore its place within the vibrant surroundings of 18th century Covent Garden. Using visual techniques inspired by artists such as Edward Rooker, and drawing on material from the Royal Opera House's historic collections, 59 Productions will trace the evolution of the three theatre buildings and celebrate the rich diversity of creative output over almost 300 years. Told through an extraordinary range of historic documents, illustrations and posters from the ROH Collections, the story of the Royal Opera House will be illuminated across its facade. Act Two will ?open up' the bricks and mortar of the building to unveil the remarkable and largely unseen creative work that goes on within its walls. This act celebrates the craftspeople, makers and creators - from costume designers and set designers to make-up artists and stage management teams - it honours the extraordinary artists who play a vital role in transforming creative ideas into unforgettable stage productions. Act Three is a celebration of performance and of much-loved productions seen on the iconic Covent Garden Stage. Illuminating Its Facade website.
