Chwalfa archiveFrom the Welsh-language national theatre of Wales comes a production based on a real life strike in 1900 featuring a community chorus from the village and surrounding area. The Penrhyn Quarry's Great Strike, Wales' longest running industrial dispute, is brought to the stage as part of the opening season of new arts centre Pontio, Bangor University's Arts and Innovation Centre. The Welsh-language national theatre of Wales brings to life the popular novel by T Rowland Hughes with a professional cast of twelve accompanied by a fifty strong community chorus. Chwalfa (meaning ?dispersal' or ?upheaval') portrays the devastating effects of the strike on the community, which lasted from 1900 to 1903, as told from the perspective of one fictitious family. The novel of the same name has been adapted by Gareth Miles, also a noted Welsh language novelist and playwright, and will be directed by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru's artistic director Arwel Gruffydd. Performed in Welsh and translated for non-Welsh speakers by the company's own smartphone app, Sibrwd.
