Set on an island in the Thames in the Summer of 1935, this play concerns Cuckoo, dropped on her head as a baby by a drunken nurse. Her future, and that of all her family, is set into disarray by the death of her doting Mam. Cuckoo has been cossetted and protected by Mam all her life but now her family have to forge a new life. What of her sister's plan to marry? What of Uncle Powell, wounded physically and emotionally in the war? Despite her learning difficulties, Cuckoo reveals hidden depths and proves crucial in finding the solutions to the family's difficulties. Maybe she's not the 'child' everyone thought she was?
