Living Portrait archiveJane Austen, one of the world's most famous authors, spent most of her life in rural Hampshire, and was known to attend dances at the Assembly Rooms in Basingstoke. The surrounding villages and towns were the inspiration for many of Austen's novels, which are still read and enjoyed by millions some 200 years after her death. Fast forward to the Basingstoke of the future: if Jane had attended dances in Basingstoke in a world absorbed by social media and virtual reality, what would she write? Where would the border between reality and fiction be, and where would it break down? Living Portrait explores the effect the internet might have on key themes in Jane Austen's writing - finding love, building friendships, maintaining family and contending with your enemies. Join the Basingstoke Youth Theatre for this brand new play written by local playwright Lydia Thomson, developed in conjunction with Proteus Theatre Company in partnership with Anvil Arts and Central Studio as part of the Jane Austen 200 celebrations.
