Maria Marten - The Murder in the Red Barn archiveOr Murder at the Red Barn. In 1830 William Corder murdered Maria Marten in a barn. As there was no popular press, this real life crime was acted out by various small groups of strolling players and fed the popular appetite of audiences, avid for horror, mystery and violence. The play grew in detail and length, becoming one of the first great 'Melodramas', author unknown. Audiences oohed with the wronged maiden, cheered the hero, laughed at the comedy and booed the villain.
