Philaster, or Love Lyes a Bleeding archiveBeaumont and Fletcher's first play, seen in London about 1608, will surprise you with its recognizable characters, its romance, its humour, and its understandable humanity. The writers, unlike Shakespeare and Jonson, with whom they worked and were friendly at the Mermaid Tavern, came from classy families. Beaumont was the son of a chief justice, and Fletcher's father became Bishop of London.
