Details

Saving Grace archiveSaving Grace was first produced at Bats Theatre in Wellington in 1994, and was an immediate success. It subsequently had sell-out seasons throughout New Zealand for the next two and a half years. In 1999 it proved to be an enormous success at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The play inspired the critically acclaimed award-winning film, Saving Grace. It focuses on Grace, a homeless nineteen-year-old who, following the suicide of her mother, is alone and full of despair. Enter Gerald, an unemployed carpenter nearly twice her age and somewhat gauche. Intrigued by Gerald's charismatic appeal, Grace moves into his flat, cynically intending to live off him for a while. Instead, a delicate relationship develops as Grace opens up. Gerald helps repair Grace's shattered self-esteem with tenderness and insight. For the first time in her life, Grace begins to feel loved and secure, until Gerald reveals his secret. The revelation leads to an extraordinary and unforgettable climax.
