First performed in 1949 at the Haymarket Theatre London, directed by John Gielgud and starring Peggy Ashcroft, Ralph Richardson and Donald Sinden. At twenty two, Catherine Sloper is neither clever nor beautiful, but to her delight she finds herself courted by the handsome and charming Morris Townsend. But is it her good and gentle heart that he desires, or her inheritance? For her father, Doctor Sloper, separating his daughter from her lover is a duty, a challenge and an entertainment...
