The Sniper - Firelines archiveFragmented and poetic, The Sniper is the monologue of an unnamed soldier whose psyche is simultaneously sharpened and blunted by the horrors he witnesses every day. Alone on a hill like an omnipotent god, the sniper watches villagers attempt to go about their day-to-day lives. He spies a pretty, young girl through the sights of his gun, and the critical line between reality and fantasy is blurred. Then the tanks roll into the village. Written by Simon Miles following a trip to Northern Bosnia during the Serbian-Bosnian war, where he spent a night on the front line for the now defunct European newspaper. For the past few years he has mixed freelance journalism with creative writing teaching at prisons and schools. He also continues to perform his own work (mainly poems and short stories) at diverse venues ranging from pubs to the ICA, and as part of an occasional and moveable live arts cabaret event called 'The Cupboard'.
