Young Dick Barton - The Making of a Legend - Episode one - The Making of a Legend archiveEverybody has to come from somewhere, and Dick Barton, Britain's favourite BBC radio hero is no different. A schoolboy is wrongly expelled for bullying and sent to a strange school where he begins a life of intrigue, passion, and swashbuckling adventure, and learns the lessons every Englishman must learn, like: never trust anyone who doesn't know the rules of cricket, how to give a clean sock to the jaw, and never kiss a girl whose best friend is an ape. Who is Al Carrumba and why does he want to kill everybody? Is Morris dancing really dangerous in the hands of a foreigner? And what's fishy about a Welshman's conkers?
