Oumou Sangare is one of Africa's truly great artists. Her funk-driven Wassoulou sound, spellbinding vocals and irrepressible live performances have made her a West African icon and international star. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou was one of the great African bands of the 70s. Based in Benin, they mixed funk and Afrobeat with the bewitching rhythms of their native Voudoun tradition. The Kalahari Surfers formed in South Africa in 1982. Their electronic mix of dub rhythm, punk aesthetic and social comment resulted in the banning of their first three albums under the apartheid regime.Performer Oumou Sangare (Mali).
