BBC Philharmonic Orchestra will be lead by their Principal Guest Conductor John Storg?rds, one of Finland's exceptional artists who have taken the classical music world by storm. Joining them is acclaimed British pianist Martin Roscoe, who performs Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.3. The programme opens with a performance of Sibelius' Finlandia, the symphonic poem written by the composer in 1899 as a protest against increasing censorship in his homeland. The turbulent music evokes the struggle of the Finnish people before reaching a calmer conclusion, ending with the melodic Finlandia Hymn, which, despite being widely believed to be a traditional folk melody, was in fact written by Sibelius himself. Closing the concert will be Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.5. Completed 11 years after the composer's Fourth Symphony, the fifth has four movements and, like the forth, is a cyclical symphony, with a recurring theme of fate. The funereal character of the first movement gradually gives way to a triumphant march which brings the concert to a dramatic close.Conductor John Storgards. Performer Martin Roscoe.
