Operatic inspiration mixes with some of the most-loved works from the Romantic piano repertoire in British pianist Freddy Kempf's return to the International Piano Series. The concert opens with Beethoven's Sonata Les Adieux, which conjures a potent tale of parting, absence and reunion. Liszt's transcription from Verdi's Il Trovatore succeeds in transferring grand opera to the piano. Epic poetic narratives are suggested in the two Chopin Ballades performed, and Schumann's Kreisleriana is a series of imaginative dreamscapes inspired by the tales of ETA Hoffmann.
