CORONAVIRUS: currently, all theatres and related venues are closed. Shows are either being cancelled, postponed or rescheduled and we are trying to keep up with all the changes. There are currently few changes after May 2020 and many shows that were due for April have been pushed back towards the end of Autumn. Pantomimes are looking like a safe bet at the moment ;-)

The fantastical Norwegian folklore of Grieg’s Peer Gynt is heard alongside the dazzling artistry of violinist Julia Fischer in the sultry, slow-burning intensity of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, conducted by Kristjan Jarvi.Conductor Kristjan Jarvi. Performer Fulia Fischer (violin).

Turangalila - T127282276

Messiaen’s Turangalila-Symphonie (1948) weaves an awe-inspiring tapestry of exotic sound. He said that it celebrates ‘love, joy, time, movement, rhythm, life and death,’ and was inspired by the intensely romantic myth of Tristan and Isolde. Messiaen hoped to create both a ‘love song’ and a ‘hymn to joy.’ In Dutilleux’s vibrant Metaboles (1965), each movement deftly introduces the next - according to the composer, ‘you could compare it with the way tiles overlap on a roof.’Conductor Valery Gergiev. Performer Joanna MacGregor. Performer Cynthia Millar (ondes martenot).

T054761935

Part of a longer score of incidental music to Goethe's play, Beethoven's Egmont overture nevertheless stands as a self-contained tone-poem in its own right. His youthful piano concerto shows the composer advancing in his own style from Mozart's model, with a tender slow movement and mischievous and sprightly finale. The impulse behind the Pastoral symphony was Beethoven's love of the Austrian countryside. The five movements embrace solitary contemplation and peasant's celebration, a summer thunderstorm and a final, tranquil hymn of thanksgiving.Performer Maria Joao Pires (piano). Conductor John Eliot Gardiner.

Hearing the first and last of Beethoven's symphonies in the same concert vividly illustrates the composer's enormous development. The First Symphony was a conscious response to the symphonies of Mozart and Haydn, and Beethoven did not produce it until his reputation as one of the best pianists in Vienna was already secure. The Ninth Symphony, premiered twenty-four years later, had few precedents other than in Beethoven's own work. The emotional span crossed by its four movements is immense, ending with a jubilant vision of mankind linked in universal brotherhood.Performer Rebecca Evans (soprano). Performer Wilke te Brummelstroete (mezzo-soprano). Performer Steve Davislim (tenor - tbc). Performer Vuyani Mlinde (bass-baritone). Company Monteverdi Choir. Conductor John Eliot Gardiner (Sir).

A chance to hear Russian and French orchestra showpieces under the expert hands of internationally renowned conductor Valery Gergiev. A special Gala in anticipation of Christmas. One of the highlights of the season must surely be this concert by the London Symphony Orchestra under their charismatic music director, Valery Gergiev. Chosen as one of the top five orchestras in the world by a recent Gramophone Magazine poll of critics, the London Symphony Orchestra have maintained a level of excellence which is rarely matched. Two years ago they appointed Gergiev as their Music Director, which has resulted in one of the great musical partnerships of recent years. In a programme of Russian and French orchestra showpieces, Gergiev will give Warwick Arts Centre music-lovers a wonderful opportunity to hear why this orchestra is regarded so highly. The evening ends with Ravel’s pulsating Bolero, a performance which will undoubtedly be one of the musical highlights of the season.Conductor Valery Gergiev. Performer Emanuel Abbuhl (oboe).

Bartók’s Second Concerto (1931) sets the piano head-to-head against wind and percussion; it uses no strings at all in the first movement, though they steal into the work to atmospheric effect. With its dance-like rhythms, this is a work of dark, anguished dynamism. Bruckner began work on his immense Fifth Symphony in 1875. Its intricate architecture preoccupied him for many years, but he never heard it performed, as he was ill at the time of its 1894 premiere.Performer Lang Lang (piano). Conductor Daniel Harding.
