'The flight of the clouds and the veil of mist are lighted from above. A breeze in the leaves .....a wind in the trees.' These were the words from Goethe's 'Faust' that inspired the 16 year old Mendelssohn to write his first great masterpiece - the resplendent, enchanting and extraordinary Octet. Before it comes Brett Dean's 'Epitaphs' - a homage to five great figures of our time in string quintet form. The programme begins with Shostakovich's 'Two Pieces for String Octet' and also includes the Strauss 'Capriccio'. Northern Sinfonia principals including Kyra Humphreys, Iona Brown, Michael Gerrard, Malcolm Critten and Louisa Tuck perform this programme in the Playhouse.Corporate Sponsor Alnwick Music Society.

The Northern Sinfonia returns to Keswick with a programme that combines the music and traditions of the baroque and tango: Bach's suite for flute and strings is paired with Astor Piazzolla's The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, a kind of homage both to the tango and to Vivaldi. Bach's influence is felt again in two of Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras suites, with a band of eight cellos plus the distinguished young soprano Katherine Manley.Performer Katherine Manley (soprano).

The ‘Jupiter’ symphony was written during trying times for Mozart. Financial problems beset his family and they moved to less expensive lodgings on the outskirts of Vienna. Attempting to put a brave face on the move Mozart wrote "I have greater leisure to work now since I am not troubled by so many visitors". Hear more of the background to the music in the last in the series of Rush Hour concerts in St Andrew’s Church. Actor Joe Caffrey will interpret Mozart's letters to provide a background to the symphonies.Director Bradley Creswick. Performer Joe Caffrey. Music Mozart (Symphony No 41 - Jupiter).

Probably the most widely recognised of Mozart's symphonies, No 40 was composed in 1788, at a moment when Mozart's popularity with the Viennese public was beginning to wane. The symphony's turbulent character has invited the speculation that it reflects Mozart mourning over declining fortunes. However, its distinctiveness could also be attributed to an artist's efforts to open up new creative possibilities. Make up your own mind in this Rush Hour performance. Actor Joe Caffrey will interpret Mozart's letters to provide a background to the symphonies.Director Kyra Humphreys. Performer Joe Caffrey. Music Mozart (Symphony No 40).
