Haydn/Beethoven/Sibelius - T2011309801

The fourth of Haydn's Paris set of symphonies is one of the finest in his whole huge output. Three stately opening movements give way to a dancing, lighthearted finale. The young Beethoven set out to show all he was capable of as both composer and pianist in his Piano Concerto no. 1. The dynamic outer movements, including trumpets and drums for extra grandeur, frame a rich, singing slow movement. The first of Sibelius' great cycle of symphonies is a brooding and powerful piece from the late 1890s. While influenced by Tchaikovsky, it shows many signs of the composer he was to become.Performer Khatia Buniatishvili (piano). Conductor Paavo Jarvi.

Strauss' Tod und Verklarung (Death and Transfiguration) begins dramatically, memories and regrets crowd upon a dying man until a rising theme, gradually becoming more impassioned, marks the transfiguration of the title. Strauss was a supreme composer for the soprano voice, and Angela Denoke sings five of his best songs. Beethoven's fifth symphony, from the most famous opening in music, proceeds through its four movements from dramatic struggle to a blazing, triumphant conclusion.Performer Angela Denoke (soprano). Philharmonia Orchestra, one of the world's great orchestras, makes a rare visit to Aberdeen with its Principal Conductor, Esa-Pekka Salonen, as part of an international Beethoven series marking the 185th Anniversary of the composer's death. The concert features the Pastoral Symphony. ?You ask me where my ideas come from? he once noted, ?they come to me in the open air, in the woods whilst walking, in the silence of the night, early in the morning?. With its unambiguously bucolic movement titles, this is the composer's attempt to set these sounds and scenes in notes on paper.Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. Performer Juho Pohjonen (piano).

The Anvil Eighteenth Birthday Gala - T0793425107

Berlioz' opera is based on Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, and its lively and genial overture captures perfectly the teasing, light-hearted spirit of the play. Mozart's double piano concerto is among his most inventive and engaging works, probably written for the composer to play with his sister. Elgar's variations are fond musical descriptions of close friends, varying from the serious ?Nimrod' (his publisher) to the romantic and delicate C.A.E. (his wife), and finishing with an energetic and confident self-portrait.Performer Katia Labeque (piano). Performer Marielle Labeque (piano). Conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy.

Recognised as one of the most emotionally complex and ambitious symphonies of the 20th century, Mahler's Symphony No.5 is conducted by Daniele Gatti. After the first performance of his Fifth Symphony, composed between 1901 and 1903, Mahler is said to have declared, 'Nobody understood it. I wish I could conduct the first performance fifty years after my death.' More than a 100 years after his death it is certainly recognised as one of the most emotionally complex and ambitious symphonies of the 20th century. From its famous funereal opening trumpet solo to its blazing finale, it encompasses an extraordinary range of styles and moods. At its heart is the Adagietto, an extended love poem to his wife Alma, who he met in 1901 and proposed to just three weeks after their first meeting.Conductor Daniele Gatti.

Jubilation: The Music of George Benjamin - T01233169041

A programme of intoxicating orchestral works mark the climax of Southbank Centre's celebration of composer George Benjamin. Hear the composer/conductor lead the Philharmonia Orchestra in performances of his works alongside those by Ligeti. The concert opens with Jubilation. Originally commissioned by the ILEA (Inner London Education Authority) in 1985 for young performers, tonight the energy and vitality of the work is brought to life by a specially formed youth ensemble and choir made up of local young people. Also featured is the more recent Palimpsests, a landscape where orchestral patterns constantly change and the listener encounters a rich canvas of floating musical shapes. Ringed by the flat horizon, concludes the second half - the piece that initially propelled a 20-year-old Benjamin to fame in 1980 when it was performed at the Proms. Dedicated to his former teacher, Messiaen, it describes vividly a storm brewing over a desolate New Mexico desert. Ligeti's mesmerising Lontano and Double Concerto for flute and oboe complete a concert full of dazzling textural works and orchestral colour.Conductor George Benjamin.

Salonen and Uchida - T0488757942

An evening of high drama, with Schoenberg's Piano Concerto performed by Mitsuko Uchida and Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting Beethoven's sparkling Symphony No.7. When Schoenberg was composing his Piano Concerto, his markings at the beginning of each movement suggested an autobiographical connection - 'Life was so easy', 'Suddenly hatred broke out', 'A grave situation was created' and 'But life goes on'. Although these markings were removed in the final published version, the underlying dramatic structure still affects the listener intensely. Beethoven's Symphony No.7, with its driving rhythms and sparkling joie de vivre, is full of bright orchestral colours. The slow introduction to the first movement lays out the skeleton of the entire work, which is coloured in over the course of the work. The finale is based on a stamping peasant dance with 'whooping horns' providing a joyous climax.Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. Performer Mitsuko Uchida (piano).

Vasily Petrenko conducts a programme of orchestral showpieces, ending with Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances, the movements of which seem to summarise Rachmaninov's compositional life. The Symphonic Dances were among Rachmaninov's last works. Originally with programmatic movement titles of 'Noon', 'Twilight' and 'Midnight', the three movements almost seem to summarise Rachmaninov's compositional life, with quotations from his First Symphony and the Dies irae leitmotif that haunts so many of his works. The programme opens with one of Hindemith's most popular works, full of the dancing melodies of Weber set into a true showpiece for orchestra, and Sibelius's Violin Concerto forms the haunting and dark-hued heart of this concert.Conductor Vasily Petrenko. Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra is probably his best-known work. Written in 1943 and one of his final works, all the hallmarks of Bartók's music are here - fierce rhythmic energy, vivid extremes of colour, folk themes interwoven with glorious melodies. It is a spectacle in every sense, and one that demands a virtuoso display from the entire orchestra - the musical equivalent of a peacock displaying its plumage. In this evening's concert it is performed alongside Bartók's lyrical Violin Concerto No.2, another late work and in essence an extended series of melodic variations.Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. Mozart's wind serenades range from genial entertainments to serious masterpieces, and this C minor work is one of the very best. Mahler's Sixth Symphony was composed between 1903 and 1905. This was outwardly the happiest period of the composer's life, but the symphony turned out to be an epic and disturbing work, about which Mahler later developed a superstitious fear. It begins with a frighteningly energetic arch, followed by a scherzo and a delicately scored andante. The huge final movement is a turbulent struggle interrupted by 'hammer blows of Fate' which lead the work to its tragic conclusion.Conductor Lorin Maazel.

An all-Beethoven evening, opening with Beethoven's Overture from Egmont, a set of incidental pieces written to accompany the first Viennese production of Goethe's play. Beethoven's Sixth Symphony also has an extra-musical programme - originally titled 'Recollections of a country life', it celebrates the composer's love of the countryside. From a musical depiction of arriving in the countryside, it passes through a scene by a brook, a country dance, and a storm before arriving at a joyful shepherd's song in the finale. At the heart of the programme Beethoven's Third Piano Concerto, a work of symphonic proportions, promises to make an exciting London debut for the 18-year-old American pianist Kit Armstrong.Conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi. Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush - T0649101917

The Philharmonia Orchestra plays a live accompaniment to Charlie Chaplin's silent film The Gold Rush in this special performance at Royal Festival Hall. Featuring Chaplin in his quintessential Little Tramp role, the film was described by The New York Times upon its 1925 release as 'a comedy with streaks of poetry, pathos, tenderness, linked with brusqueness and boisterousness... the outstanding gem of all Chaplin's pictures'. Chaplin reconstructed the film in 1942 upon the advent of sound to the cinema, removing scenes (most famously eliminating a kiss with the leading lady at the end so as not to upset his wife!) and recording a musical score, which was nominated for Academy Awards. This evening's concert revisits the original 1925 comic masterpiece, with a score reconstructed and conducted by Carl Davis, who accessed archives of Chaplin's meticulous notes and found sketches of music for the removed scenes.

Prokofiev's second violin concerto was written in the same summer as the ballet Romeo and Juliet, and shares its drama and lyricism. The tender, slow movement is one of the composer's most beautiful, while the finale is an exuberant dance. Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony was composed on his return to Russia in 1888 after a successful European concert tour. The waltz feel of much of the first movement foreshadows the waltz which takes the place of the usual scherzo. Berlioz composed his Symphonie fantastique in the early 19th century, just three years after the death of Beethoven, yet it inhabits a musical world of pure Romanticism. Its passionate idée fixe, which represents the object of the protagonist's unrequited love, is transformed throughout the work. She appears at a ball, then in the tranquil countryside, before her melody is transformed beyond all recognition into a grotesque mocking dance in the last movement, Dream of a Witches' Sabbath, and is combined with the Dies Irae plainchant, another idée fixe of the Romantic era.Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. Concluding the Philharmonia's Rachmaninov Cycle, Nikolai Lugansky brings his virtuosity and impeccable musicianship to bear on Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. At times dazzlingly virtuosic, at others eerily pensive, and moving between every mood in between, this piece is one of Rachmaninov's finest. The Sorcerer's Apprentice was Dukas' first orchestral work, and La Péri was the last, written for Diaghilev and tinged with brilliant colours suited to its exotic scenario about a prince in search of a magical lotus flower. Mozart's piano concerto was one of the three he composed while working on The Marriage of Figaro. Its limpid scoring and deeply poetic slow movement, which takes the lilting form of sicilana, give it an atmosphere unique among his many concertos. Rimsky-Korsakov's suite Scheherazade continues the Oriental theme, taking tales from the Arabian Nights and dressing them in gorgeous orchestral colours to make a satisfying musical frieze. Mussorgsky's dramatic and full-blooded depiction of a witches' Sabbath is one of his most successful short pieces. After a riotous night, the frenzied participants are dispersed by dawn and church bells. Stravinsky's Violin Concerto takes its cue from the baroque suite, with four short movements which each start with the same chord. After a busy toccata come two Bach-like arias, and the piece ends with a playful capriccio. Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra is a late masterpiece in five movements, commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra to try to help the composer in his difficult period of exile in America. Filled with orchestral colour and bursting with ideas, it is perhaps the composer's most approachable work, building steadily to an exultant and affirmative conclusion.Performer Viktoria Mullova (violin). An evening featuring the most recognisable tunes in the classical repertoire; luxurious tunes abound in both Elgar’s expansive ode to Italy ‘In the South’ and his musical portraits of his closest friends in the ‘Enigma Variations’. Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto was one of the first concertos for the instrument in the Romantic period yet it remains at the forefront of the violin repertoire today, ubiquitous in any violinist’s discography.Conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy. In early November 1901 Gustav Mahler met Alma Schindler: he proposed to her three weeks later, and they were married in March 1902, by which time Alma was already carrying their first daughter. Thus Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, composed in 1901-02, bears witness to their new-found love: according to the conductor William Mengelburg the Adagietto was Mahler’s proposal of marriage to Alma, and it remained incredibly important to her - she requested that it was played on the 20th anniversary of his death. Yet the work moves far beyond just this central movement in its emotional scope, from the Funeral March of the first section through the huge Scherzo to the massive finale.Conductor Leif Segerstam. Traditional in format, Mozart’s Third Violin Concerto follows the convention of the orchestra playing accompanist to the solo violin. Although clearly influenced by his travels through Italy, the finale contains the lively Hungarian folk-tune known as the ‘Strasbourger’, which gave rise to the work’s nickname. Mahler’s later works were often associated with the idea of farewell, an idea that was intensified after the posthumous première of his Ninth Symphony. The chaotic waltzes and dances of the earlier movements die out to make way for a beautiful final adagio, an emotion-ridden solemn hymn.Conductor Lorin Maazel. During the composition of his Seventh Symphony in 1811/12 Beethoven endured the pangs of unrequited love, was coming to terms with his worsening deafness and suffered, along with his fellow Austrians, the effects of the Napoleonic wars wreaking havoc across Europe. Despite episodes of doom, grief and mourning it remains one of his most joyous and popular symphonies, with a thrilling opening Vivace that juxtaposes rhythms derived from Sicilian dance music. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 18, meanwhile, contains all the features that made his concertos great: effortless integration of keyboard and orchestra, colourful orchestration, a seamless flow of ideas, and the interplay of melancholy with optimism.Conductor Philippe Jordan. Although Glazunov was a contemporary of Shostakovich and Prokofiev, his work is reminiscent of that of his more Romantic compatriots Tchaikovsky and Rimsky- Korsakov. His Violin Concerto contrasts Slavic melancholy and cheery fanfares while showcasing the soloist’s technical brilliance. Dvorák’s Ninth Symphony was composed to celebrate Columbus’s discovery of the ‘New World’ with American tunes and rhythms throughout, yet the composer’s Bohemian roots and nostalgia for his native Czechoslovakia also shine through.Conductor Leif Segerstam. Shostakovich’s Eighth Symphony is one of the composer’s symphonic masterpieces.Written just five months after the defeat of the German army at Stalingrad it is thought by many critics to be a more considered and effective response to war than his Seventh, the Leningrad. In the key of C minor it joins a legacy of famous C minor ‘tragedy to triumph’ symphonies, from Beethoven’s Fifth to Bruckner’s Eighth and Mahler’s Second. However, despite exuding a profound feeling of tragedy the conclusion is far from triumphant, suggesting the hero has not clearly triumphed, merely survived.Conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy.
