Kandinsky and Schoenberg 1911-1912 - T2105084884In 1908 Kandinsky heard Schoenberg's music for the first time at a Munich concert - it was an encounter that made him understand the full potential of an abstract art. "In your works you have put into practice something I have greatly longed for in music...the independent passage through individual adventures, the intrinsic life of the individual parts in your compositions is precisely what I too am attempting to find the field of painting." This concert traces their artistic exchange.Starting with a few prophetic works for reciter and for chamber ensemble which set the textual and instrumental context and including Schoenberg's astounding 5 minute poem for high sporano, Herzegwachse (first published by Kandinsky in the Blue Rider Almanac, it concludes with a full staging of Pierrot Lunaire, a 'cabaret superiure' for which we have traced documentation and sources to recreate the theatrical circumstances of the very first performance. The programme is completed with works by Liszt.Music Liszt (Der Traurige Monch La lugubre gondola and Elegie). Music Schoenburg (Herzgewachse - pub Blue Rider Almanac 1911). Performer Eileen Hulse (soprano). Performer Sally Burgess (singer). Director Mike Ashman. Conductor Richard Bernas. Company Almeida Ensemble. | |
