Production details
In the virtuoso Concerto, one of Ravel’s last works, he aimed to compose something ‘gay and brilliant.’ Written at one of the unhappiest periods of his life, Stravinsky’s Symphony in C (1940) perhaps shares a stern religious sensibility with his great choral work, the Symphony of Psalms (1930). Debussy’s Prélude (1894), by contrast, offers a dappled, teasing sensuality: so striking on its first performance that the audience demanded an immediate reprise.
