Forbidden - T01172628515

In this powerful solo work, Aditi Mangaldas reflects on a question that is more urgent than it has ever been. Why are women the world over, from conservative as well as liberal societies; sanctioned, judged, controlled, hounded and eventually punished to have the courage to own their desire? In a unique dance vocabulary of contemporary dance based on kathak, FORBIDDEN looks to explore the root of this fear and persecution. Underscored by a wide range of cultures from across the globe, Aditi will journey through emotions and experiences, reclaiming her desire. The work is in three parts: Awakening: Dream, Fragrant flower, Cage Playing the Game: Denial, Adornment, Seduction, Rage Burning: My story, Consigning to flames all that is FORBIDDEN

Echoes & I Imagine - T576019341

Echoes, choreographed by Aditi Mangaldas, is a stunning approach to traditional Kathak dance. Here, both choreographer and performer listen attentively to the echoes of our life. Aakash dances majestically across a stage invaded by cascades of bells conjuring up his roots and ties. I Imagine is Aakash's exploration of dance-theatre by embodying three generations of migrants through masks and acting. The result? A visceral and witty take on identity and longing. Dozens of piled suitcases on stage are unlocked to unveil a very touching performance.

Within/Knotted and Unwrapped - T02136645207

Choreographer Aditi Mangaldas presents two contemporary dances based on the art of Kathak. In this UK premiere, she explores the classical Indian dance form. Mangaldas uses her knowledge and experience of Kathak to create a contemporary dance vocabulary influenced by classical Indian dance. In her latest work, Within, Mangaldas looks at the deepest, most complex and contradictory human emotions - love and hate, tenderness and harshness, humanity and brutality. At the Edinburgh International Book Festival 2013, Salman Rushdie said, 'Classically, we have defined ourselves by the things we love. By the place which is our home, by our family, by our friends. But in this age we're asked to define ourselves by hate. That what defines you is what pisses you off. And if nothing pisses you off, who are you?' Is there another way to discover the sky, the eternity within us? Where should we seek inspiration for this journey?
