Programme C

The world-famous and world-class dance company, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, returns to Sadler's Wells for the first time since 2010 with an exhilarating showcase of dance. Celebrating nearly 60 years of unparalleled artistry, Ailey's trademark technical brilliance and passionate energy bring audiences everywhere to their feet every night. Aszure Barton's exhilarating new work LIFT celebrates and challenges the dancers with its markedly intricate rhythmic patterns and mercurial structure. Driven by the dancers' passion, skill and collective power, the work was created over a developmental process with the entire Company. Following this is Awakening. Choreographer Robert Battle uses his taut, ritualistic style to powerful effect in a dance that expertly balances chaos and resolution, dissonance and harmony. His first new work since becoming artistic director in 2011, the piece is set to a symphonic score by frequent collaborator John Mackey. Next, audiences will experience Cry: Alvin Ailey's signature solo. Originally choreographed as a birthday present for his mother, Ailey then created the dance for his muse, Judith Jamison. Concluding the evening is Ailey's legendary Revelations - the most seen modern dance work in the world. More than just a popular dance work, it has become a cultural treasure, beloved by generations of fans.
