Be Your Self - T1103471691

What makes you ‘you’? Garry Stewart‘s latest work for Australian Dance Theatre, Be Your Self, reveals the precarious stability of the concept of self as the work steps through the conventions we use to convince ourselves of a singular ‘I’. Be Your Self is informed by the idea that there is an enormous degree of unconscious ‘editing’ of experiences and incoming stimulii that is required in constructing a smoothly unfolding, chronologically sequenced perception of our reality and consistent idea of self. Stewart situates the body at the centre of his inquiry. Despite our civilising cultural inscriptions the body is a force to be reckoned with. In Be Your Self the ADT dancers are transformed into erupting, powerful, creative entities projecting a mountain of startling physical images and impresssions set to a wildly unpredictable, cartoonish, electronic score.

G - T932276278

Australian Dance Theatre returns to perform Artistic Director, Garry Stewart’s powerful reworking of the time-honoured classic Giselle, titled simply as G. Sex, death, hysteria and jealousy - the central themes of the work - are expressed through Stewart’s distinctive choreographic approach which tests the possibilities of the human body through full-tilt athleticism. The score by long term ADT collaborator Luke Smiles is accompanied by a running commentary that toys with language codes on hovering screens, reconfiguring the story of the original ballet and its themes.Choreographer Garry Stewart. Music Luke Smiles. Performer Larissa McGowan.

Held - T0694098207

Held - frozen in impossible flight, caught, pinned down in suspended animation. Different at each performance, the quick-fire ballistic rampage from these astonishingly athletic dancers is captured via a series of photographs instantaneously enlarged and flashed onto giant screens. Projected behind the rocketing dancers, these amazing images allow us to see and experience movement in startlingly unexpected ways.Producer Dance Consortium. Choreographer Garry Stewart. Design Lois Greenfield (photographer).
