Respite/Okan' Nijo (One)/Boreas - T1676204451

Respite is a dramatic reflection of society’s hopes and fears, as people struggle to survive in the 21st Century’s ever-changing world. The piece is full of contrasting, lyrical and seemingly chaotic gestures - challenging the ‘status quo’ and urging society to stop, step back and take a look at the bigger picture! Run time 35 mins. Okan' Nijo (meaning One), which toured to critical acclaim throughout 2007/08 (35 minutes in duration). The piece was the first opportunity Bode Lawal had to bring his BLDT alive and showcase its potential onstage. And to round off the billing, Bode Lawal will perform a brand-new solo work, Boreas - The Greek god of Northern Winds (7 minutes in duration). This solo has been choreographed by Peter Coenen, the former Rambert Dancer who is now Dance Academy Director at Calderdale College of Performing Arts - Halifax.Performer Lauren Okadigbo. Okan' Nijo (One) - Clockwork/Glory - T01884568238

Clockwork (Aiduronijo) oscillates within the different components of time through intricate interaction and precise movements and features live music by international jazz and classical composer Tim Garland. Glory. In this new duet, Sakoba show how in today’s endless pursuit of material goals we often disregard our spiritual selves, take everything for granted, and forget to give thanks. The evolution of dance via diverse cultures, across continents and through time has produced a vast array of dance styles. Okan’ Nijo shows how commonalities do exist, and how the roots can often be traced back to a single thread.

Sango/Iyanu (Miracle) - T0919310623

A spectacular new double bill by choreographer Bode Lawal. Sango takes its name and inspiration from a West African god of thunder. Majestic, fiery and brave yet temperamental and destructive, this new piece is a post-modern interpretation of ritualistic Nigerian dance. In contrast, Iyanu is a stirring and soulfully seductive piece full of hypnotic and tantalising movement rooted in West African dance and spirituality. Sango - the sacred god of thunder - is respected in Yorubaland (West Africa), parts of North America and Cuba - as a brave, majestic and destructive character - the perfect character to be brought to life on stage through the gracious movements of Sakoba Dance Theatre. Iyanu (translated as Miracle): (26 minutes) - Miracle promises to take the audience to places they’ve never been to before and acknowledge a higher level of understanding about African dance today - using serene, soulful and angelic powers of performance. The abstract force will tease people’s minds like a magnet, the result being adulation acknowledging Sakoba’s ground-breaking genius and allowing them enough breathing space to realise the evolutionary foundations being set for the next generation of dance.Choreographer Bode Lawal.
