Holistic Strata/Haptic - T01692210655

Street dance and Butoh combine to explore a radically minimalist aesthetic featuring cool elegance and sudden shock waves of movement. Tokyo-based multidisciplinary artist Hiroaki Umeda is a performer, sound artist and lighting designer whose work is both sublime and violent, and very much in touch with his contemporary Japanese roots. In the spectacular and high tension Holistic Strata he appears almost to dissolve in a hurricane of digital images. In Haptic, beautiful bright hues shift and morph in relation to his fluid movements creating an exquisite visual and sonic experience. These are works to be felt and experienced not just simply watched.

Adapting for Distortion + Haptic - T809581492

Hiroaki Umeda is a man of synthesis and speed. Drawing on western classical dance sources for the fundamentals of his work, he soon made use of hiphop to generate body movements which have rounded off by his Japanese influence of Butoh. His pieces are more about sensations, as an increasing evidence of man fading away with the advent of technological supremacy. The aesthetic propositions offered by this multi-talented artist – Umeda is a choreographer, sound, image and lighting designer and performer – who locates his dance at the heart of electronic and digital material. Kinetic art, computer innovation and lighting all serve a work of minimalist and radical beauty. Haptic and Adapting for Distortion are perfect illustrations of it.
