Overdrive/Shuffle it Right/Light Flooding into Darkened Rooms
Richard Alston’s
Overdrive takes up the pulsating rhythm of Californian composer Terry Riley’s music and runs with it to the wire - shifting, changing direction, curving over and under but never pausing for breath.
Shuffle it Right is a light and good humoured company piece syncopating to the jazzy songs of Hoagy Carmichael, who himself sings and plays piano on these wartime recordings, which include Stardust, of course, and Ol’ Man Harlem and Riverboat Shuffle.
Light Flooding into Darkened Rooms deals with privacy, with a delicacy of feeling masked by the formal facade of propriety and gracious behaviour. It is performed to pieces by the 17th century lute master Denis Gaultier and contemporary music for mandolin.
