At 10 Claire and Daniel were best friends. At 11 they hardly spoke. At 12 they had their first date. At 12 and a half their first fight. At 13 she had her first kiss but not with him At 14....? My Mate Fancies You is a theatre in health education programme aimed at years 6 and 7 that explores the physical and emotional changes that take place during puberty. The programme aims to take an honest look at puberty by exploring the difficulties and worries that many young people face when growing up. The play starts with Claire and Daniel as inseparable next door neighbours and follows them through the starting of secondary school, family problems, boyfriend/girlfriend relationships, to their final making up at 13. The play also covers the many changes to their bodies as they talk to the audience and each other about spots, body hair, periods and everything besides! Using humour to take away much of the embarrassment that exists around growing up, the show confronts these issues in a sensitive, honest and accessible way.
