Mahagonny Songspiel, by Weill with libretto by Bertholt Brecht, was written in the 1920s. It is a modern-day morality tale where God banishes citizens of an imaginary city to hell, whereupon they say they are there already. Themes of greed and money are present too in Trouble in Tahiti, by Bernstein, the story of a suburban housewife's dream of escape set against a backdrop of commercialisation.
