Set in a Tuscan village, early 19th century. The wealthy Count Asdrubale puts to the test three young widows who want to marry him - Aspasia, Fulvia and Clarice. Disguising himself as a Turk, he arrives at his own castle claiming that Asdrubale owes him a large sum of money. Only Clarice and Giocondo stand by their friend. Clarice in turn resolves to test the Count's faithfulnes and appears in the guise of her twin brother, a soldier, threatening to remove Clarice. When Asdrublae begs for Clarice's hand, she reveals her identity and the couple swear their love, leaving Fulvia and Aspasia to find other lovers.
