Canoe Theatre & Angharad Evans

We kick-start it all by giving selected Incubator applicants a space where they can be creative and try out their new ideas, while offering the resource and support needed for the work to be developed to its fullest potential. Then those ideas are shared with an audience - which is where you come in! Once all of the companies have performed, you will have the opportunity to catch up with the artists informally to share your thoughts. The two pieces chosen for this season's Incubator Project come from Canoe Theatre and Angharad Evans. Warm Heart of Wales by Canoe Theatre An exploratory work conceived by Julia Thomas (Canoe Theatre) and Cassie Raine. Canoe TheatreWhen Megan, an administrator from Maerdy wins a trip to Malawi, she becomes the fearless traveller she never knew she was, venturing deep into the heart of the tribal lands. Enchanted by the culture and rituals of the Chewa people, she is invited to take part in the Gule Wamkulu, a secret ritual where she meets charismatic Gule dancer, Blessings. Combining mask work, dance, drumming and a community chorus ensemble, Warm Heart of Wales explores the fusion of two cultures, and a bond of love and understanding with the power to transcend social contexts and transform lives. Canoe Theatre is a collaborative enterprise committed to producing great plays from around the world in order to acknowledge the global and multicultural world that we live in. In Light of Tom Mathias by Angharad Evans. At the turn of the 20th Century, self-taught photographer Tom Mathias spent countless hours recording the daily life around the Cilgerran district of Dyfed, West Wales. After his death in 1940, the negatives were left in an outhouse, where they and the stories of the people in them lay forgotten for more than thirty years. Working bilingually, Angharad Evans and her collaborators integrate visual art and performance to bring these lost stories of the people within Tom's photographs to life. In Light of Tom Mathias brings the spirits of ancestors to the present day; tales of family duty, the power of blood, community spirit, love, and the effects of loss. Angharad Evans is a singer, director and theatre maker with a deep rooted history in Cilgerran, West Wales. Weston Studio Theatre
