Full title: The persecution and assassination of the Marat as performed by the inmates of the asylum of Charenton under the direction of the Marquis de Sade
. Set in 1808, in the aftermath of the French Revolution, the Marquis is directing a play at an asylum. To educate and rehabilitate the inmates, the Marquis presents a musical pageant of the Terror of Paris, culminating in the murder of Jean-Paul Marat at the hands of Charlotte Corday. First performed in England in 1964 by the Royal Shakespeare Company.
