DetailsFaisal Devji of the New School in New York is one of the leading intellectual interpreters of the meaning of Al-Qaeda and the author of the book Landscapes of the Jihad. At the ICA, he will present a controversial lecture arguing that Al-Qaeda represents, essentially, an "ethical" rather than a political movementâ its political aims are rhetorical, and dissolve on closer inspection. Fuelled by the fragmentation and dispersal of Islamic thought globally, he argues, Al-Qaeda has deftly separated the idea of jihad from its institutional moorings and turned it into a weapon of spiritual conflict. After his talk, he will be interviewed by Brendan O Neill, deputy editor of Spiked-Online and the author of a forthcoming book about Al-Qaeda. Chairing the event will be Gordon Corera, the BBC s security correspondent.
