I think this is the fourth time I have seen Matthew Bourne's amazing Swan Lake - but there have been changes. This is the re-staged 30th Anniversary production dubbed "The New Generation" as it is giving a platform to new dancers that have come through the New Adventures talent development programme. Indeed 56% if the company have taken that path bringing a wealth of new, talented, motivated dancers to our stages.
Did I love this production? You bet! The dancing is slick, energetic and accurate, the story-telling sublime and the choreography crisp and sparkling. The set is imposing and effective without being intrusive and the costumes are just fabulous. Personally, I think the re-staging has cleaned the show up, not that it really needed it, but this version seems more focussed on the story and that works for me.
Whether you like ballet or not, dance shows or not, classical music or not - if you love theatre, you will most certainly love this!
