Motown the Musical. Photo by Tristram KentonMotown celebrates its 60th anniversary on Saturday 12 January 2019.

I love Motown music but this show really didn't do it for me. The sound was loud, but not in a good way, and the balance seemed to bury the vocals a lot and made some of the dialogue difficult to pick up. The brightness of te original music was lost in a somewhat muddy soundscape.

The story of the rise and fall of Motown is interesting but we are given liuttle of that, although billed as a musical this is more a concert with some story bits shoehorned in. Although some ofthe voices were good that was was not universally true and I would have prefered fewer songs sung complete and in the original arrangements ... perhaps this is not that show.

I must say, the set was very impressive, but in the end, that was what I was watching ...

I still love the music, but I will be listening to the albums in future ...
