Yes, it’s on again. Fact not Fantasy. Gene David Kirk and Peter Bull have lured several of the 2016 cast back for this revival of the good-hearted, angst-free story of gay friendships. David Dillon said he wrote it as relief from the unrelentingly gloomy plays of the eighties, to show that it is possible to be gay and be happy. It delivers with a big smile. It doesn’t pretend to be a great drama, not much happens, but the 5 star laughs and surprises keep coming.
Ben Kavanagh is back on searing form as Ray, frustrated priest, butt of jokes but the man with the wickedest lines and impeccable timing. Sam Goodchild switches to play Kevin and proves a worthy foil to Ray and a rock-solid host.
Of the other returnees, Jamie Firth is once again deliciously slutty as Brian; Lucas Livesey twinkles quietly as Philip.
Freddie Hogan gives plenty of attitude as James – check those star jumps! Daniel Forrester (Peter) shows a delicate balance of shyness and outrageousness. James Farley illuminates Andy with such innocence before showing he is more than ready to get down and dirty.
Whether you need to ask "Barbra Who?" or can reel off musical theatre’s grandest ladies with aplomb, this show gives you plenty laughs. And a lot of… naked enthusiasm. Get down there to celebrate this last hoorah at the old venue.
