Touring show seen at the Theatre Royal Plymouth
By Robert Iles - 4th Aug 2021

Gosh, a proper big venue with a proper big show and a proper big audience! What a delight that was even with the additional entry requirements and restrictions - thanks to the Theatre Royal Plymouth for managing the evening so smoothly.

Grease is definitely a "fans show", loyal supporters will come and see it whenever it appears - more so this time as we have all been starved of theatre over the past 18 months. Wonderful songs and a passable storyline make this a great 50's night out.

Peter Andre playing Teen Angel and Vince Fontaine was suitably, and delightfully, over the top. Receiving applause at every appearance he really lifted the pace and brought life to the show with his confident professionalism. Less so his role as Sergeant when he seemed less sure of his character - a short scene but it slowed the pace quite a bit. Generally, the show didn't seem quite on point and lacked the oomph needed to carry it off the stage during the acting though it always picked up for the songs and the slick dance routines.

A versatile set, great lighting and brilliant choreography helped the show along though at times the words of the songs were indistinct up in the Circle - mind you, most of the audience could probably have sung along to the whole show anyway! Some people clearly were expecting a literal presentation of the film on stage, which this show is not intended to be.

Most of the audience was caught up and carried along and plenty were dressed in their "Ladies in Pink" tops; real fans. For me, however, the production lacked heart, but I think it just needs to settle in - after all, it has been a long time for everyone since shows of this size toured our regional venues.

If you are a Grease fan you will love it, so book your tickets and have a great night!
