The 2011/12 touring version of We Will Rock You rocks back into Bristol
By Robert Iles - 14th Oct 2011

We Will Rock You TourIt is two years since I last saw We Will Rock You and I was pleased to hear that it was returning to the Bristol Hippodrome as I have fond memories of the last outing. The cast has, of course, changed but the show remains the same - normally once is enough to review tours but in this case I decided to make an exception.

And the show did not disappoint - still the same loud, fabulous, music, still brought the same smile to my face, still made me stand and clap along with the rest of the audience. What I had forgotten was that quiet piece in Act 1 when they reach the Heartbreak Hotel and remember those who died before their time; last time I was there they had just added Michael Jackson, this time it was Amy Winehouse - when Meat (Jenny Douglas in her first role since Over the Rainbow) sings "Only the Good Die Young" I doubt there were many who didn't wipe a tear .... a strangely quiet and beautiful moment in an otherwise frenetic show yet kept completely true by the honesty of the cast's delivery. Thanks guys ...

Amanda Coutts as Scaramouche has an almost unbelievably good voice which matches really well with Noel Sullivan's Galileo and Earl Carpenter as Khashoggi was simply a delight to watch (and hear). With thirty people on stage and a great band of eight this is a big show and I love it.

And at the end, to really bring the house down, Brian May steps on stage to play guitar. I have seen the show twice, on both occasions Brian May has stepped up to the stage ... now that is very special and there was no way anyone wasn't going to stand and clap and hoot and holler! Fab.

A brilliant night out ...
