BLOC never fail to put on a good show and this was no exception despite the fact that I really don't like Sunset Blvd. much at all (sorry all lovers of musicals out there) ...
The hired sets were fabulous and the projections that took us from place to place in the story were very atmospheric, though both of these tended to mean that a lot (too much?) was played effectively front of tabs. The singing from the principles was spot on but sadly the sound quality meant that a lot of the dialogue/recitative was simply lost - whether this was bad miking or a result of some early hoowl-arounds was hard to tell but the overall sound quality was mixed and poor.
The chorus gave it their all, as always, but whilst they were clearly having a great time they appeared to lack a commitment to the story that they were part of telling ... some of the large chorus scenes are complicated and many layered so need precision in the telling - hopefully that will come by the end of their run - ever the amateur performers bugbear.
New ways to dream? Hardly. An enjoyable evening? For those that like Sunset then yes, yes it was ...
